New Stream Library Block
The Library block in Stream has been updated to include the Discover search box. Students can now search for articles, books and other material at the same time, all from within the paper site.
Students
If you wish to add the new Library block to your 'Overview of my courses' Stream page, click on 'Edit this page' in the top right corner. If you already have the old Library block (with a library catalogue search box) in the left hand column, delete it. Then at the bottom of the column, you can add the 'Massey Library' block:

The process is similar for adding the block to paper sites. Full instructions are in the latest Stream News. Note that this block is not intended to replace any Library blocks that have been specifically tailored for the paper.
Please contact us if you need help with this.
Innovative Library Skills Teaching in Stream
Library staff are using Stream in innovative ways to teach library and information literacy skills to students at the point of need. Some recent examples include:
- a quiz to assess vet students' need for a library skills class
- scripted searches and guidance for the new Masters of Public Health (Biosecurity) and Masters of Veterinary Medicine (Biosecurity) students in South Asia
- information and research skills deeply embedded into some College of Education papers
- strong uptake of tailored library blocks by the School of English and Media Studies and other HUMSS disciplines
- Adobe Presenter tutorials in College of Business papers
Using Library Electronic Resources in Stream
We encourage you to include articles from Library licenced electronic journals in your Stream course, however please be aware of possible restrictions.
Each year the Library subscribes to thousands of online journals, ebooks and article databases for a substantial cost. The legal contracts which the Library signs for each of these stipulate how and by whom they may be used, and these override any Copyright provisions.
Read on to find out more about including PDFs, links, citations and acknowledgements, print resources, and other Library material in Stream.
Library Skills in Stream Improve Assignments
Students are using better sources to support their assignments when library skills are embedded into Stream papers, according to librarians and academic staff.
Librarians have created a series of online tutorials to help students find the information they need for assignments. These cover topics such as finding journal articles, using EndNote bibliographic management software, creating a search strategy and using a variety of databases.
The tutorials are available on the Library website, but embedding them into Stream papers means students get the right help, targeted to their study, just where and when they need it and, if necessary, in person from librarians.
In a pilot run this year in some College of Education papers, students are becoming more competent in information literacy and using library resources, while working within their Stream paper.
'Harvard Business Review' Licence Restrictions
Harvard Business Review licence restrictions allow linking to the Library catalogue record only. From there individual users may access the journal online.
The licence restrictions stipulate that we:
* Do not link to content from Stream or WebCT
* Do not upload PDFs into Stream or place on electronic reserve
* Do not include content in course packs or study guides
Many journals do allow direct links or including a PDF. If you need help with embedding Library resources and information into Stream or Study Guides, please visit our Teaching Support page.
