Internet Explorer 9 & Library Databases

by Massey University Library Email

Some Library databases are not compatible with Internet Explorer 9 (IE9). If you have already installed IE9 and are having problems, you may need to use an alternative browser (such as Firefox or Chrome) or the IE9 compatibility mode (shown below).

Databases with IE browser problems include:

  • Scopus - use the compatibility mode in IE or another browser
  • MasseyLink - use the compatibility mode in IE or another browser
  • Web of Knowledge - the results page is blank in IE9. This affects Web of Science, Current Contents Connect, Biological Abstracts, MEDLINE, CAB Abstracts, and ISI Proceedings. Use the compatibility mode, an earlier IE version, or another browser such as Firefox or Chrome.
  • Taylor & Francis Journals - may not open in IE9 or IE8. Use Firefox or an earlier IE version.
  • ProQuest - does not allow direct export into EndNote in IE. Use Firefox.

The new Music subject guide has just been launched.

It brings together the key library resources for music, including articles, recordings & scores, books & ebooks, concepts & definitions, background information and organisations.

We're now about halfway through the ongoing Subject Guides redevelopment project, so look out for further guides in the new, easier to use format during this year.

CONZUL/Statistics NZ Agreement for Universities

by Noelene White, Information Services Email

CONZUL –Council of New Zealand University Librarians (Committee of Universities New Zealand) and Statistics NZ have in place an agreement that allows New Zealand University students and staff access to certain NZ and Australian Statistics. See Unistats for more detail.
Each University has a contact officer who liaises with Stats NZ and is the person that researchers must apply to in order to obtain data not available in the public arena. For Massey that person is me, Noelene White (NZP Librarian Turitea Library).

All contact officers meet with Stats NZ representatives twice a year via the Access Grid. Below are the main points of the most recent meeting, held this month.

New Online Soil and Land Resources

by Noelene White, Information Services Email

Landcare Research has some new online databases available for researching soil data, land use and environmental data - LRIS Portal, S-Map Online and Our Environment. These resources cater for a range of users, from professional geosaptial data users, to the more general user.

S-Map Online - user friendly database that "provides consistent and comprehensive national soil data layers to support applications at local & regional-national scales" Please note: There is only limited geographical cover at present. Where coverage is available you are able to access soil type data - and link to a pdf comprehensive explanation of the soil type - drainage, soil moisture and depth to hard soil data. There is also a range of scales to choose from so it is possible to get to a very fine level of detail.

LRIS Portal - Land Resource Inventory - this accesses Landcare Research's geospatial data. Use it to create maps, analysis, modelling, and generally find out about New Zealand's environment and land resources. LRIS includes more than 80 landcare research databases - they include NZLRI (New Zelanad Land Resource Inventory), LENZ (Land Environments NZ), FSL (fundamental soil layers) as well as regional soils databases and digital elevation models.

Our Environment - replaces the old geospatial data integration portal. The new interface gives a more general browse option, map view and query. You can check landscape, vegetation and land suitability data for a particular geographic area. As with S-Map Online, a fine level of detail is available.

Are you aware there is a new edition of New Zealand Soil Classification (2010)? Follow the link to find its location in the Library.
