Facebook & Bagsying

by Massey University Library Email

Suggestion for Turitea Library:

In terms of Facebook debate I don’t think it should be banned. It is a useful means of communication between class mates – especially during exam times where we compare answers to past tests. There are plenty of computers in Marsden and BSC also!!!

However, I do find it really annoying when people “bagsy” computers by leaving their stuff on them and then disappearing for lunch/class for more than ½ hour. They should be logged off! Is there any way a computer that is inactive for more than 10 minutes can be auto logged off? This would let people who needed to stretch their legs do so.

Also – if they could be not allowed to sign back in to that computer it would mean they would have to move! Otherwise they could just leave their things and sign back in when they returned.

Thank you for your feedback, interesting to know students are using FB for communication about exams and study.

As for ‘bagging’ computers, yes, this is a pain. Once an Information Commons computer has been inactive for 20 minutes the screen will go blank. At this point Library staff will remove the belonging of the person who did the ‘bagsy’ thing, and log them out. Let us know if you see a blank screen with stuff still on the desk…

Facebook Police

by Massey University Library Email

Yay, you've got a computer in the Information Commons - but please think about the people still standing in the queue.

We've had students asking us to be the Facebook police, as it's really frustrating to be waiting in line for a computer and see people filling in time checking their friends' status, or playing games.

But we're not that keen on looking over everyone's shoulders to see what they're up to on the computers - and we don't think you'd like it much either. We hope a bit of common sense on your part can sort this problem out.

So when there's a queue, try to stick to study-related use. Pick quieter times for socialising online.

And don't leave your computer unattended for long periods. We know you need time to get a book, go to the loo, grab some food or whatever. But if you're away for longer than about 15 minutes, we may need to log you off.
