Archives Spotlight
We've just created a second ‘edition’ of the Archives Spotlight where we highlight interesting items or collections from the University Archives collections.
The Archives Spotlight focuses on some of the Lippincott material we have in the Archives. The American architect Roy Alstan Lippincott was instrumental in the design of the original Massey Agricultural College campus - now the University's Turitea site.
Above: Science Building Plan (1929)
The Sir Geoffrey Peren Building was designed in the Spanish Mission style. Initially known as the Agricultural Science Building or just Science Building, the building was completed in 1931. Click on the image to have a closer look.
The previous Archives Spotlight focussed on some of the items from the Massey Collection.
If you have additional information about any of the material featured in the Archives Spotlight or if you have items which you would like to gift to the University Archives, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

Recording the history of food in New Zealand – Records and Archives Week 2011
This year’s Records and Archives Week celebrates the very important role food plays in our daily lives. A display in Turitea Library of photos from the archival collections gives a glimpse into some aspects of the history of food research and food production in New Zealand. The display on Level 1 runs from 2 to 13 May 2011.
One part of the display tells the story of the dairy industry through photographs and items from the Dairy Records Archive. The other part shows a brief history of food-related research and teaching using items from the Massey University Archives.
The display includes these photos, among many others:

A ton of butter being removed from a churn (1952)

Research into Maori potatoes, Institute of Natural Resources (2001)

A Massey University Food Technology student project (1990s)
University Archives 25
As part of celebrating 25 years since the official launch of the University Archives, we are pleased to announce our new spotlight page, where we shed a bit of light on some of the interesting items from our collections.
On the Archives’ webpage you will also find a link to a small selection of our historical photographs that are viewable online.
More information of what the Archives goals are, and what we collect, is available on our Mission and Policy page.

Massey University history timeline goes live
A timeline of Massey University’s history (from the first mention of an agricultural college for the North Island to the present) has just been launched on the University Archives webpage. It covers the major events and phases in the University’s development. Phases identified are the Lead up to Foundation (1879-1926), Foundation Years (1927-1945), Years of Consolidation (1946-1963), Becoming a University and Expanding (1964-1992), and Spreading its Wings over Three Cities (1993-2008).

Instructions on how to use the timeline are provided on the above mentioned Timeline page.
The timeline is the result of the labours of the Library’s Digital Services team in conjunction with the University Archives. It is a work in progress and more historical facts and photographs will be added over time. Enjoy!
